爱迪生12岁时,便沉迷于科学实验之中,经过自己孜孜不倦地自学和实验,16岁那年,便发明了每小时拍发一个信号的自动电报机。后来,又接连发明了自动数票机,第一架实用打字机、二重与四重电报机,自动电话机和留声机等。有了这些发明成果的爱迪生并不满足,1878年9月,爱迪生决定向电力照明这个堡垒发起进攻。他翻阅了大量的有关电力照明的书籍,决心制造出价钱便宜,经久耐用,而且安全方便的电灯。

他从白热灯着手试验。把一小截耐热的东西装在玻璃泡里,当电流把它烧到白热化的程度时,便由热而发光。他首先想到炭,于是就把一小截炭丝装进玻璃泡里,刚一通电可马上就断裂了。

爱迪生并不气馁,继续着自己的试验工作。他先后试用了钡、钛、锢等各种稀有金属,效果都不很理想。

过了一段时间,爱迪生对前边的实验工作做了一个总结,把自己所能想到的各种耐热材料全部写下来,总共有1600种之多。

接下来,他与助手们将这1600种耐热材料分门别类地开始试验,可试来试去,还是采用白金最为合适。由于改进了抽气方法,使玻璃泡内的真空程度更高,灯的寿命已延长到2个小时。但这种由白金为材料做成的灯,价格太昂贵了,谁愿意化这么多钱去买只能用2个小时的电灯呢?

实验工作陷入了低谷,爱迪生非常苦恼,一个寒冷的冬天,爱迪生在炉火旁闲坐,看着炽烈的炭火,口中不禁自言自语道: 炭炭

可用木炭做的炭条已经试过,该怎么办呢?爱迪生感到浑身燥热,顺手把脖子上的围巾扯下,看到这用棉纱织成的围脖,爱迪生脑海突然萌发了一个念头:

对!棉纱的纤维比木材的好,能不能用这种材料?

他急忙从围巾上扯下一根棉纱,在炉火上烤了好长时间,棉纱变成了焦焦的炭。他小心地把这根炭丝装进玻璃泡里,一试验,效果果然很好。

爱迪生非常高兴,紧接又制造很多棉纱做成的炭丝,连续进行了多次试验。灯炮的寿命一下子延长13个小时,后来又达到45小时。

这个消息一传开,轰动了整个世界。使英国伦敦的煤气股票价格狂跌,煤气行也出现一片混乱。人们预感到,点燃煤气灯即将成为历史,未来将是电光的时代。

大家纷纷向爱迪生祝贺,可爱迪生却无丝毫高兴的样子,摇头说道: 不行,还得找其它材料!

怎么,亮了45个小时还不行? 助手吃惊地问道。 不行!我希望它能亮1000个小时,最好是16000个小时! 爱迪生答道。

大家知道,亮1000多个小时固然很好,可去找什么材料合适呢?

爱迪生这时心中已有数。他根据棉纱的性质,决定从植物纤维这方面去寻找新的材料。

于是,马拉松式的试验又开始了。凡是植物方面的材料,只要能找到,爱迪生都做了试验,甚至连马的鬃,人的头发和胡子都拿来当灯丝试验。最后,爱迪生选择竹这种植物。他在试验之前,先取出一片竹子,用显微镜一看,高兴得跳了起来。于是,把炭化后的竹丝装进玻璃泡,通上电后,这种竹丝灯泡竟连续不断地亮了1200个小时!

这下,爱迪生终于松了口气,助手们纷纷向他祝贺,可他又认真地说道: 世界各地有很多竹子,其结构不尽相同,我们应认真挑选一下!

助手深为爱迪生精益求精的科学态度所感动,纷纷自告奋勇到各地去考察。经过比较,在日本出产的一种竹子最为合适,便大量从日本进口这种竹子。与此同时,爱迪生又开设电厂,架设电线。过了不久,美国人民便用上这种价廉物美,经久耐用的竹丝灯泡。

竹丝灯用了好多年。直到1906年,爱迪生又改用钨丝来做,使灯泡的质量又得到提高,一直沿用到今天。
