Alan Marshall 1902 1984是澳大利亚最著名的作家之一。自传体小说《我能蹦过去》是他的成名作品。这一讲主要介绍他的童年时代。
Alan Marshall grew up in outback Victoria in the early 1900s. When he was 6 years old, he contracted polio. Unfortunately doctors had not yet learnt how to treat it, so many children were paralysed for life. Alan Marshall was one of them.However, even after his long stay in hospital, life was still an adventure for him. He knew he would always need crutches but he had great courage.He used to wander through the Australian bush, just like a boy with two good legs. He used to do the same things that other children did and sometimes he even did things that other children couldnt do.Eventually he won a scholarship to study accountancy, so he had to go to Melbourne.Later on he began writing for newspapers and magazines. He also wrote novels and short stories.During the Second World War hewrote stories about Australia for a newspaper that was sent to.Australian soldiers fighting overseas.These stories told the soldiers about life at home.In his autobiography I Can Jump Puddles he describes the things that happened in his childhood. He tells how he was in love with a girl at his school. Sometimes Id say abruptly, Heres a lolly for you.Id hand it to her, then walk away. I hoped shed understand that this was evidence that I loved her and was determined to marry her when I grew up.I think she did because she gave me an apple once.Here, take this, she said. I took it and walked around in a dream for the rest of the day.
